I absolutely loved this book. My mom is Roman Catholic and I was raised by her alone. I never understood the "whys" behind so many of her religious practices, nor did she. She did them bc she was taught to as she's a cradle Catholic. Before deciding to covert (I was baptized protestant, my dad is Luthern, so technically I was never catholic, though it's the only church I know) I wanted to be sure I not only knew the practices of the church, like I had, but I wanted to know the in depth reason of WHY.. why do Catholics do this or that. I wanted to make sure the faith was a true match for me. This book is amazing and in combination with the catechism has solidified my decision to convert. Amazing book! I will be keeping it and rereading, for sure!
If you are looking for a well-written, whole-picture explanation of the Faith--an explanation that is at once thorough, well-written and easily digestible--this is the book. TFE is highly accessible and well-written. The book is extraordinarily compact, having much more inside than you'd have thought by glancing at it on the shelf. In tone and content, it is neither "fluffy", like certain modern Catholic books, nor "scary" like certain books published by Tan. The author makes no bones about the horror of mortal sin, of even deliberate venial sin nor even does he suggest that Hell is something only Hitler, Stalin and the like have to be worried about. On the other hand, because he anticipates the worries and concerns of his Catholic readers--he is writing for Catholics, first and foremost--he covers everything in a way that is ultimately encouraging to those who, with the help of grace, are willing to try their best to "put on Christ" and put to death "the old man".The following quote is a good representation of what's so great about this book:"If we do 'what in us lies' by regular prayer, frequent confession and Holy Communion; by recalling often what a grand thing it is to have God himself dwelling within us, what a glorious thing to know that at whatever moment God may call us, we are ready to open our eyes upon him in eternity (even though purgatory may come first); if we keep ourselves occupied with useful work and wholesome play, and avoid persons, places and things which might put a strain on our human weakness--then there can be no doubt about our victory."Now that's the Good News!However, the books explanations of all technical matters are wonderful as well. I love the section on the Trinity! I love the explanation of Original Sin!
I use this book to supplement my RCIA materials. My most recent student commented several times that all Catholics should read this book. He found it interesting and easy to understand. I ordered this book for him as part of his welcome "home" gift. He was very pleased as he had planned to order one for himself.
OUTSTANDING book. So excellent at describing the Catholic faith in detail which makes everything make sense, and in extremely easy language. Including for instance what theologans say about things people find hard to understand about the faith. This is a highly necessary read. One of the best books on faith out there.
I like this book because it explains in very simple terms all of the important aspects of our catholic faith. I grew up as a catholic and went to catholic school but the information from this book has given me hundred times more knowledge of my faith that what I had learned in school. I highly recommend it. It's a long book but well worth your time.

This book is unparallelled in explaining the Catholic Faith. Easy to read, easy to understand, very deep and very spiritual. After reading this book, if you do not understand why the Catholic Church believes and teaches what it does, then there is no hope for you to ever understand the truths of the Church. Best book I have ever read. Easy to travel and carry with you. Buy TWO, one to keep and one to give away.
I ordered the book "The Faith Explained" and expected the book that was shown on Amazon: colorful cover, picture, soft cover (maybe hard cover if I was lucky). When I received the book in the mail, it WAS a hard cover... but not only that, it was published in 1959!! I LOVE old books, so I was thrilled! And to make this even more exciting, the book had a wonderful old smell to it. Call me nerdy, but that was the cherry on top!
