Bernays' style is more reminiscent of someone pitching an idea to would-be investors than a primer on the essence of propaganda. In other words, Bernays' book is itself a propaganda piece. However, if you want to know the foundation of contemporary advertising, this is not a bad place to start.
This book presents a once in a lifetime journey into the shadows. It offers a glimpse into how the world has been operated since the early 1900s. Advertising and propaganda was used to sell more then simple items - it was blended and skewed to sell us on ideologies, agendas, and interests of powerful people and companies. This book shows us how the father of modern day propaganda thought and how he used propaganda campaigns for hundreds of America's best corporations and political leaders. Political leaders all over the world sought this man's council for executing their own agenda. It became obvious half way through reading this book was in itself propaganda written by the author to attract more wealthy clients; thus, the book lacks a definitive step-by-step guide.
'Propaganda' should be taught at schools, making a new generation aware of how we human beings have become a danger to each other. Nothing is as it seems, and the populations in the West loosing Knowledge, which is forgotten, deleted and denied. New narratives are spun, and what was initially just a smart political maneuver had entered history, replacing 'that, which is', a reality, which doesn't need to be believed because it just is. How quickly have these narratives entered our schools and universities, and they are taught, and they are believed, and we can't understand when there are people who try to challenge the illusions we call our political reality. Our time has become too dangerous as we blindly stumble into wars which are sold to us as necessary to achieve peace. So, let us look back when Mr. Freud made his first crude attempts to open our mind, so we could learn who we are... that of course didn't happen, because people saw 'opportunities', and Edward Bernays gave us the formula, by which to follow. Please, this book is a must.
Bernays, Freud's nephew, explains how propaganda is used to control the public in every facet of their life. This and Walter Lipmann's "Public Opinion" are two of the most important books I can recommend. They openly speak about how everyone is controlled by s small group of rich and powerful men. This sounds like conspiracy theory talk but it is the basis for communications classes, sociology, and social psychology in any college or university in the country.
This book is simply a "must read" by each and every American above the age of 12. I found Bernays refreshing to read. I truly appreciated Mark Crispin Miller's forward for placing this book into today's context. What is truly amazing about this book is that Edward L Bernays truly believed that Corporate America had all Americans' interest at heart. I do not believe that Bernays was malicious in any way. Clearly Goebbels and Goering bastardized Bernays work in a truly evil way by developing the "Big Lie" and making "propaganda" a dirty word for eternity.Clearly Hitler's henchmen's use of propaganda has found a new home in America. Bernays' propaganda bears no resemblance to today's Corporate America's propaganda. We are repeatedly lied to by the corporate media and we are fed utter nonsense when we read the newspapers, listen to the radio, watch television and go to the movies. The Corporate Media has "everything to sell and nothing to tell." Clearly this was not the intent of Edward L Bernays.Again, this book should be mandatory freshman high school English class reading. I believe that the book was written in a unique period of American history where America still held innocence and there wasn't the possibility of an instant death nuclear holocaust or slow death global warming.
For what it's worth, propaganda will probably never revert to being a neutral word. Even by the time this book was published, the damage had already been done. Still, one can appreciate the peek behind the curtain of public relations that Bernays provides. It was very instructive on the various ways that public opinion is and can be shaped. If only he could have foreseen the age of the internet and social media. The book also comes with a valuable introduction detailing the history of the word 'propaganda' and a retrospective on the book itself, perhaps more interesting than what follows. Most people are aware nowadays of the myriad ways in which media tries to influence them, but there is still value in reading this.
I gave this book five stars, not because I agree with the author, but because the knowledge gained from it is valuable to understanding the methods used to sway public opinion. Some of it seems like common knowledge now, but these methods were widely unknown back in the 1920's. And most people still aren't adept at spotting it now in their daily lives (perhaps in 'this' scenario, but not in 'that' situation) - which likely depends on the skill of the propagandist who propagated the propaganda. We're surrounded!
