Botany for the Artist is a gorgeous reference for plants. The pages are filled with a mix of photographic plant portraits and Sarah Simblet's detailed sketches. Everything's beautifully laid out. The exquisite illustrations in the book are mainly black and white.As with typical DK books, it's also filled with educational information. Every part of the plant is explored, from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers to the fruits. They are provided with scientific names and also interesting information on how they grow and their functions.The drawing lessons are short two-page guides at drawing found throughout the book. There are tips on capturing likeness, establishing the composition, adding colours and details. Also included are selected features on Renaissance botany artist.This is an excellent resource for botany artists. This is a completely different sort of book then for example ' The art of botanical painting ' . This is a book to inspire one to grab a pencil and start drawing , not so much a book to learn how to . There is a small section in the beginning about materials , colors and how to draw , but for the rest it is more a history of the botanical drawings , with the very best examples of what has been done in the past , ( Dürer ' s grasses ) and what is possible now with some really inspiring and useful photo's of plants and then also drawings by Sarah Simblet herself . Look trough this book , you'll get the urge to try something for yourself , you'll want to rearrange your usual compositions in a new and exiting way , you'll want to try a new technique . It is a book to inspire you to look again at even the humblest of plants and see possibilities .
A gorgeous book with stunning art. There are sections where the preferred techniques of other master artists are examined and a section about the supplies Sarah likes to use herself. We are a family of artists and have found this book to be informative and inspiring. The book is also a great technical guide for plant types and parts. It says "botany" right in the title, but sometimes "for the artist" can mean a certain disregard for scientific accuracy. The botany presented is accessible without dumbing things down.
the is a very basic book, and does not have nearly as much botany as i thought. It may be useful to artists starting out, but for anyone who wishes to draw or paint true botanical illustrations, it would have very little use.
For all those who love botanical art, this book is super delicious. If you're a botanical artist you will thrive inside this masterpiece. the ink drawings are inspirational as are the master classes, the botanical information on structure of trees, vines, leaves, flowers, seed pods, wetlands it's all there. If you're an artist combine with the Eden Book and you're set to go. No i don't know the author Simblet so this review is from the heart. if you google her name you get a pix of her studio which is another work of inspiration.
I love the gorgeous photography within this large book as well as the intricate style of the author, but there are wonderful examples of botanical illustrations from other artists included in each "masterclass" section. I have already learned some very helpful tips from just flipping through it, but look forward to careful study in days to come. It has the added value as a beautiful coffee-table book that anyone would appreciate.
I purchased this book to give to a family member who wants to develop her drawing abilities. When it arrived, I carefully thumbed through the pages. The illustrations are very beautiful and the paper and binding are high quality. This is a book that is a pleasure to hold and look at regardless of whether one is an artist. I think the recipient will really enjoy this gift.
Amazing resource, breath-taking imagery and photos. Excellent survey of Botany for the artist. This shouldn't be confused with a college level botany reference. This is botany for poets. But it covers the material a botanical illustrator must know without getting mired down.I do wish they had covered a bit about the frequent confusion over tree identification and the tricky genetics that can baffle botanists as well as laymen. That really isnt much of a gripe to have.Buy this book.
